Author J.B. MacKinnon talks The Once and Future World
Local journalist and author J.B. MacKinnon has a knack for taking large, daunting collective problems and refocusing them in ways that allow us to see how we might actually do something about them as individuals. In fact, he takes on the largest, most daunting problem of them all: our often destructive relationship with our environment. MacKinnon’s 2007 book, The 100-Mile Diet (coauthored with Alisa Smith), changed how many consumers view the supply chain that brings food to their tables. His new work, The Once and Future World, surveys the remaining stretches of wilderness around us and shows how they’ve always been in a state of flux—and how we might not only conserve but expand them, so that we’re no longer cut off from their ancient meanings. MacKinnon will discuss the new book at an October 3 event at UBC’s Frederic Wood Theatre, presented by the Vancouver Writers Fest. See the Writers Festival website for details.
