Granville Street was hopping today with live music, food, and broad representation of Taiwanese culture across the Lower Mainland.

It's all part of TAIWANfest, which continues through Monday (September 7) in downtown Vancouver.

But for aficionados of high-end furniture, some surprising delights are at the Robson Square ice rink.

That's where the festival is presenting "The Art of Seating".

Chair 43 reportedly sold for 10,000 euros (nearly CDN$15,000).

It's a collection of eight pieces made entirely of bamboo. And they demonstrate how Taiwanese design combined with engineering precision is making the island nation a leader in sustainability.

One of the highlights is Chair 43 (see above), which was created by craft artist Kao-Ming Chen and designer Konstantin Grcic from 43 laminated bamboo slats.
