Round up the amigos and dust off your sombrero: Vancouver’s largest Cinco de Mayo celebration is coming to Robson Square (800 Robson Street) on May 7.

The event is produced by Wet Ape Productions, the same people behind Harvest Haus and Kelowna’s Center of Gravity, who have teamed up with Savoury Chef’s new Mexican catering subsidiary, Buena Onda, and local nonprofit group Latincouver.

“It was really important to us that we work with the right group to bring in authentic elements,” event producer Liam Peyton tells the Straight by phone, “but we’ll also make it our own and put our own twist on it.”

Robson Square will be transformed into casa de amigos, complete with Mariachi bands, piñatas, traditional Mexican dancers, and a full-size luchador ring where masked wrestlers will face off throughout the night.

Buena Onda, meanwhile, will serve up authentic Mexican eats like gourmet tacos, ceviche, and lados. A full-service bar will provide sips like palomas, micheladas, and a signature margarita, which will be crafted in collaboration with Donnelly Group.

Attendees will also be able to nab Mexican crafts by various vendors, and a dance floor will offer party-goers plenty of space to salsa, merengue, or cha-cha the night away.

Donnelly Group will host a preamble event, to be announced at a later date, as well as an after-party at The Blackbird Public House & Oyster Bar (905 Dunsmuir Street).

The Cinco de Mayo celebration is 19+ and takes place from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tickets are $20 and are now available online.
