Vancouver Pride Society resolving employee issues from past year

As the Vancouver Pride Society prepares to hold its annual general meeting, it has been busy resolving issues that arose over the past year.

Vancouver Pride Society executive director Ray Lam resigned in October after a series of controversies. VPS board member Tim Ell had resigned in July due to concerns about how Lam handled a trans rights pledge that participants were required to sign. Parade director Bry Leckie and communications coordinator Cynthia Williams also left their positions last summer.

Volunteer coordinator Melody Johnson told the Georgia Straight in November that she had been fired from her position last July and that she had subsequently filed a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal case.

The VPS issued a statement today (April 27) that the human rights complaint filed by Johnson has now been resolved. The VPS will be working with Johnson to improve its policies for future employees. Both parties have agreed not to comment publicly any further on the matter.

Meanwhile, in March, the VPS announced that their new events director is Andrea Arnot and their new managing director is Kieran Burgess.

Arnot, who was a senior program manager for Richmond Multicultural Services, will organize and execute all Pride events, including the Pride parade.

Burgess, who was an Ironman race director and a commercial director for the University of Queensland Rugby Football Club, will oversee fundraising, administration, and financial results.

The Vancouver Pride Society will be holding its annual general meeting at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 30) at the community hall at 870 Denman Street.
