Vancouver Weekend: We're Thinking....Florists

    1 of 5 2 of 5

Need something to do this weekend? Here are five florists where you can nab a bouquet for mom this Mother's Day (May 8).

      The Flowerbox, 1319 Commercial Drive

This go-to spot on the Drive suits its ’hood to a tee: local, natural, artsy, and a little bit funky. Even classics like bouquets with yellow roses and pink gerberas get a slight touch of the wild here, mixed with meadowy greens, contrasting brights, or exotics. And you'll find lots of locally grown blooms. For Mother's Day, look to the shop’s Girly mix, a pinky-purply blend of everything from orchids to hyacinths to roses exploding out of a cool glass cube; or the smashing Citrus arrangement, with hits of lime green, neon orange, and hot pink. Or become the instant golden child by arranging for the Flowerbox’s unique Weekly Flowers—say, a month’s worth of artful bouquets showing up at the door, with mom just leaving the old vase out for pickup; call for details.

From peonies and hydrangeas to daisies and tulips, find a bloom for every mom at Mei Mei Florist.
      Brittany Duggan

Mei Mei Florist, 2978 West Broadway

In the five-minute walk between Macdonald and Balaclava streets on Broadway, there are four places to pick up flowers right now. The one that stands out in the bunch, however, is Mei Mei’s for its uniquely bundled bouquets. Arrangements on display outside feature a range of flowers and foliage, all wrapped in matching tissue paper. Pricing is reasonable given the colourful collection you walk away with—$16 for a mid-size arrangement, all the way up to $69 for a larger sized creation. Inside the shop, you’ll find a variety of flowers sold separately (depending on the season), including peonies, hydrangeas, lilies, daisies, roses, tulips, and more. Mei Mei’s also sells a few types of orchids, if you’re looking for a flower gift that keeps on giving. And the mom-and-pop shop offers same-day delivery anywhere within Metro Vancouver.

Fleurs Privé's luxe arranegment of roses and peonies are a match made in heaven for Mother's Day.
      Fleurs Privé

Fleurs Privé, available online and this Sunday (May 8) at Meadow Gifts and Apparel, 104 Water Street

For the mama who enjoys the finer things in life, there’s online florist Fleurs Privé. The Vancouver-based company crafts bouquets that are all about the presentation: think dozens of freshly imported roses—available in red, baby-pinks, and crisp white—nestled in an assortment of shining art-deco-inspired boxes. The mobile shop even offers a variety of naturally preserved blooms that last up to five years—ideal for self-described black thumbs. For Mother’s Day, Fleurs Privé is offering a special bundle of hand-assembled peonies and lavender roses, which can be ordered in advance online or purchased this Sunday (May 8) at an exclusive pop-up shop at Gastown’s Meadow Gifts and Apparel (104 Water Street). Bouquets start at $139, so bring the plastic—but no one’s more worth it than mom, right?

Don't expect any mass-produced arrangements at the gallerylike space of Riley Park's Flower Factory.
      Flower Factory

      Flower Factory, 3604 Main Street

As much a gallery as a flower shop, this atmospheric Main Street mainstay blends textures and colours like fine oil painters. No mass-produced chrysanthemum and baby's breath here: bouquets might blend spiky, alien-looking protea with dainty larkspur and smooth eucalyptus, or cabbage roses with lily of the valley and spearlike greens. But what we love most are the artful ceramic vessels here, especially for the orchids, paired with twisty wood, or succulents. These or the range of weird and wonderful air plants are live options that will last long past Mother's Day

You'll have a hard time choosing between the plush bouquets at Lily's Florist.
      Lily's Florist & Gifts

      Lily's Florist & Gifts, 3927 Knight Street

This family-owned-and-operated flower shop is known for its bountiful selection of fresh flowers and beautiful pre-arranged bouquets. As soon as you walk into the charismatic storefront, you’ll be overwhelmed by the choices available. From fresh-cut stems to leafy greens, exotic rainbow-coloured roses to blooming lilies, you’ll have a hard time deciding what to choose. The owner, Carmen Van, is known for creating large and plush bouquets, with custom orders that include unique pairings from Ferrero Rocher chocolates to Hello Kitty characters made from floral petals. Indulge your mom with one of this popular flower spot’s signature creations, with the option of adding a cute little stuffed bear from its gift aisle. After giving your mom flowers from this florist, you’re bound to become her favourite.
