Renters of Vancouver: "We nicknamed it the 'shoe closet'"

“Renters of Vancouver” takes an intimate look at how the city's millennials are dealing with the housing crisis.

“I lived for a while in Coal Harbour. I moved in with a friend of mine from Australia, and her best mate that she met here. The condo only had two bedrooms, but I didn’t have enough money to live on my own so I decided to go for it anyway

My bed was in the 'den', which was basically just the hallway with a couple of wooden boards around it. I made a doorway by draping a sheet of material over the top wall. It was pretty small—there was only just enough room to fit a single-person mattress. We nicknamed it the 'shoe closet', but it still cost me $660 a month.

The apartment was pleasant, though, and after a while I got used to not having my own space. Sometimes you’ve just got to adapt.”
