ICBC's modified collector vehicle program applies to old cars and trucks registered from 1958 and earlier.

But today, the provincial government announced that it will be adjusted to include vehicles made up until 1974.

"The collector car industry is very important to B.C. and we want to open up the opportunity for more people to join in the experience of owning a true 'classic car' and to be able to participate in classic car shows," Transportation Minister Todd Stone said in a news release. "We want to see this specialty vehicle program remain viable, preserve vehicle history and evolve with the times. That's why we are opening up the opportunity to owners of specialty cars within the 'muscle car' era."

It's being done after a request was made by the Specialty Vehicle Association of B.C.

The program will also register modern-era replicas of North American vehicles built from 1942 and earlier.

It means the public can expect to see more "collector" licence plates on the roads, beginning next summer.

"This change is welcome news to the collector car enthusiasts of B.C. and a great step forward for the hobby," Specialty Vehicle Association of B.C. director Bob Kelly said in the news release.
