The countdown is on for the 29th annual Vancouver Writers Fest, and to whet attendees’ appetites, organizers have unveiled the high-wattage lineup for 2016.

Featuring over 100 names in 87 events, this year’s Vancouver Writers Fest welcomes homegrown authors such as local legend Joy Kogawa, Man Booker Prize–nominated Madeleine Thien, award-winning anthropologist Wade Davis, and an artistic associate at the function, Clea Young.

Giller Prize–winning André Alexis, veteran radio host Eleanor Wachtel, and Emma Donoghue, author of Room and Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the critically acclaimed film adaptation of the same name, are also expected to speak.

In addition, bibliophiles can look forward to hearing from more than 20 international writers, including The Underground Railroad author Colson Whitehead, feminist and funny woman Lindy West, and the New Yorker’s David Denby.

Both a showcase of celebrated literary talent and a forum for thoughtful conversation, the Vancouver Writers Fest tackles the theme of “reimagining your world” this year, which will highlight the “understanding, challenging and changing of the increasingly treacherous 21st century”.

As such, attendees can expect readings, panel discussions, spoken-word performances, and other events to address topics such as the migrant crisis, First Nations experiences, politics, and the aftermath of slavery in the U.S.

The Vancouver Writers Fest takes place from October 17 to 23 on Granville Island and at various venues across the city.
