On the eve of Remembrance Day 2014, members of a Vancouver rugby club are thinking back to the players who came before them and working toward honouring their memories.

A group of more than 30 rugby players and alumni from the Vancouver Rowing Club (VRC) is planning a trip to World War One memorials in France and Belgium in September 2015. There, they will honour their club members who fought and died in the Great War a century ago.

According to a news release, the team will visit the Canadian war memorials of Vimy Ridge in France and Ypres in Belgium and pay their respects to individual members like Thomas Percy Woodward who was killed at Vimy Ridge in 1917 at the age of 22.

The grave of VRC alumni Major K.C.C. Taylor, DSO, at Sunken Road cemetery in Somme, France.

The "Tour to Remember" will take place from September 10 to 21, 2015. It recognizes 100 years since Canada joined the Allies on the Western Front in WW1 and the VRC lost its first member to the conflict.

“A tremendous amount of research has gone into this tour, particularly into identifying VRC rugby members who fought and died in WW1, and into learning their stories," stated rugby club member and tour organizer Cameron Tompkins in the news release. "The purpose of this tour is to ensure all of our founders are remembered.”

Founded in 1886, the VRC in Stanley Park is Vancouver's oldest amateur sports club. It was originally a rowing and boating club, and rugby was added in 1908.

When the war broke out in 1914, many VRC members enlisted. Forty-two died and 36 were wounded. Twenty-two members won decorations for gallantry.

In 2015, the rugby club will visit the WW1 battlefields and play three rugby matches against local teams on its 10-day tour of France, Belgium, England, and Wales.

The VRC is accepting contributions to support the travel expenses of players 24 years and under. For more information on the tour, as well as historical details, see the 2015 VRC Rugby Tour website.
