French fashion house Hermès may be best known for its leather handbags—Kanye West once famously gifted his wife, Kim, a huge Birkin adorned with hand-painted portraits of twisted, nude ladies—but the label also produces a selection of high-quality jewellery, accessories, homewares, and even saddles.

In order to familiarize the public with the company’s extensive range of offerings, Hermès has brought Hermès at Work to Vancouver. A free interactive exhibit running from now until September 25 at Jack Poole Plaza, it offers attendees an up-close look at how the Paris-based retailer produces its goods.

The live installation features nine artisans plucked straight from Hermès’s headquarters in France, some of whom have worked with the company for as long as three decades. From leather-workers and glovers to watch-makers and gem-setters, each craftsperson is accompanied by a translator so that visitors may direct questions to them as they hand-cut, polish, engrave, and stitch together their respective products.

Among the highlights are a behind-closed-doors look at how the company’s iconic leather Kelly bag is made and a live silk-printing demonstration that walks viewers through Hermès’s lengthy and incredibly meticulous colour-application process for its scarves. (Each hue is applied separately using a traditional flatbed screening method, also known as impression à la lyonnaise.)

“It’s not only about leather,” said Guillaume de Seynes, executive vice-president of Hermès International, in a welcome speech during a media preview of the event. “The universe of Hermès is really wide, so it’s about watches, it’s about silk, it’s about gloves, porcelain, and so on—without forgetting, of course, the bags. And this is what people are invited to discover.”

Hermès at Work runs from now until September 25 at Jack Poole Plaza.
