The Straight’s weekly Shop Stalk finds the coolest deals for your closet, vanity, and home, so you don’t have to. Simply read up, show up, and stock up—no bargaining necessary.

      October 20: Gastown Shop Hop

One of Vancouver’s most popular shopping events returns for its fall iteration from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. tonight (October 20) on Water Street and the surrounding area. Featuring a lineup of 45 fashion-forward boutiques, the one-night affair offers shoppers seldom-seen discounts on eyewear, apparel, and accessories for men, women, and tots, plus plenty of chic homeware options, too. Look for the white balloons—and glasses of bubbly—throughout the ’hood, which will signify that a business is participating in the hop. As for the deals? We hear Nouvelle Nouvelle is offering 25 percent off select garb and LYNNsteven is slashing 20 percent off both marked and unmarked tags—and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

October 21 to 22: MEZZI sample sale

Not familiar with local fashion-tech startup MEZZI? Well, now would be a good time to get acquainted. The Vancouver-based company produces chic clutches, crossbody bags, and handbags that are made for on-the-go #girlbosses (and #boybosses) of the 21st century. Touting its totes as “wearables”, the genuine leather accessories come built-in with handy features like phone chargers, Bluetooth speakers, interior lights, and call and message notifications—because, yes, bags are now capable of relaying notifications. (What a time to be alive.) The company is hosting a sample sale this Friday and Saturday (October 21 and 22) at 89 Smithe Street, where you can check out the tech IRL and nab some deals on the goods.

October 23: Vintage & Handmade Society’s West End fall market

The Vintage & Handmade Society is taking over Jim Deva Plaza (1200 Bute Street) for its fall market from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. this Sunday (October 23). Like past VHS markets, this one will feature a host of homegrown makers hawking everything from handcrafted jewellery and accessories to ceramics and candles. Local artist Bonnie Gaskin and psychic Angel Oracle will be live-painting and conducting tarot readings onsite, respectively, and small-batch kombucha company Bucha Brew will be available to quench visitors’ thirsts. Partial vendor fees benefit Canadian Disability Resources, which assists people with disabilities by providing them with medical equipment and other means, so by shopping, you’re supporting a good deed.
