Thirty years ago this month, Nike debuted its now iconic Air Max: a sneaker that defied footwear conventions by proudly showcasing its air-cushioning technology, which appear as “bubbles” on the midsole.

In celebration of the occasion—as well as the launch of Nordstrom Pacific Centre’s new Nike sneaker boutique—the company is releasing a limited run of Vancouver-themed Air Max 90s. The clean white kicks for women feature laser-etched images of distinctly Vancouver emblems, such as orcas, the 604 area code, and the Stanley Park totem poles. Hockey sticks, Pacific dogwoods, and the word “Vancouver” are also visible.

“We chose symbols that are important to the city…so that this feels really unique, like a moment in time,” a Nike representative told the Straight during a preview of the Nordstrom x Nike space.

The shoes, which come in a fluorescent blue-and-green plexi-glass box, retail for $225. Approximately 50 pairs will be up for grabs once the sneaker boutique opens to the public tomorrow (March 18) at 9:30 a.m.

Also available at the shop-in-shop are a wide selection of Nike women’s sneakers in hard-to-find colourways, athletic apparel, and complementary pieces by designer labels like Public School, MSGM, and Nasaseasons. A mix of fitness, fashion, and lifestyle goods, the stock is curated collaboratively by Nike and Nordstrom’s director of creative projects, Olivia Kim.

The products at the boutique will be updated regularly. The Air Max display, which is decorated with transparent bubbles and blow-up furniture that nod to the shoe’s visible air-cushioning unit, is on until March 26.
