Whister's rising population has made it more difficult to find parking spots in the resort community.

So on Tuesday (May 23), council will vote on a staff recommendation to provide free transit on 10 summer weekends between July 1 and September 4.

The free service would be funded through parking revenue.

The staff recommendation is expected to pass.

The permanent number of residents in Whistler has reached 11,854, according to a staff report, up 21 percent from six years ago.

Last winter, municipal and Whistler-Blackcomb staff "increased the management of overnight parking in the Day Lots and encouraged people to move to appropriate locations such as the Library or Conference Centre underground lots so as not to interfere with snow clearing operations".

"In partnership with BC Transit and Whistler Transit Ltd, additional service hours were added to the winter 2016/2017 schedule, the review of Route 1 Valley Connector was initiated, the review of Routes 4/5 continued through the winter, as did work on the feasibility study of the Sea to Sky Corridor Regional Transit plan," the report states. "BC Transit is aiming to report out on this work in June so that the recommendations can be included in the upcoming planned transit service expansions."

In addition to transit improvements, there are four other "strategy areas" outlined in the report: Highway 99 efficiencies, a peak-day operations plan, better parking management, and highlighting "preferred transportation modes".

Other recommendations include testing secure bike parking during summer events and creating a parking app to promote alternative parking locations during busy periods.
