Guy style
Technicolour dreamcoat
Guys can finally apply Adhesif to their wardrobes. This fall, the locally made line presents its first male selection with the Jammer Jacket. It’s a patchwork of salvaged stretch-wool, in a kaleidoscope of cubist combinations that includes colours such as burgundy, chartreuse, and grey. A thoughtful touch is pockets roomy enough for carrying digital accessories. Each piece is one-of-a-kind and goes for $210. The jacket will be available mid-September at Halfmoon (1650 Johnston Street, Granville Island), Circle Craft (1666 Johnston Street, Granville Island), Dream (311 West Cordova Street), Etsy.com, and at monthly Portobello West markets.

The art of shaving
Dermalogica’s Shave boxed set is packed with straightforward, easy-to-use products that cleanse, cushion, and comfort the face during shaving. The Daily Clean Scrub is a dual-action exfoliating cleanser that preps the face for shaving. Micro-fine silica beads polish skin and minimize ingrown hairs. Defending against bumps and razor burn is the Pre-Shave Guard. Camphor, eucalyptus, and menthol ignite a cool, tingling sensation while glycerin and natural extracts soften the beard. Containing moisturizers like jojoba, glycerin, and shea butter, the Soothing Shave Cream lubricates for a close shave and reduces razor aggravation. The Invigorating Shave Gel does the same in a clear, oil-free formula with an icy tickle. For a smooth finish, the Post-Shave Balm
offers a soothing texture, followed by the Daily Defense Block SPF15, a lightweight lotion that moisturizes and protects ($50). Visit www.dermalogica.com for retailers.

Fedora fusion
With classic men’s hats back in vogue, how very Vancouver it is to wear one that blends East and West. Four selections that accentuate traditional western-style fedoras with Japanese flourishes are available at Rice Terraces (1441 West Broadway). The hat bands are made from kimono material, and are punctuated by a traditional seal featuring Japanese characters of the label, Ryuzu. The rounder version, made of a paper fabric, is available in white (black has already sold out), while the narrower style, made of hemp, comes in tan, grey, and black ($35).

Saxx talk
Is it something in our water that is inspiring locals to launch underwear companies? First there was Ginch Gonch. Now it’s Saxx. The Vancouver-designed boxers help prevent “stickage”: two mesh panels line the crotch to stop balls from bouncing astray. Saxx Everyday is made with cotton, polyester, nylon, and spandex. Saxx Bamboo is 66 percent bamboo and naturally antibacterial. For athletes, there’s Saxx Performance, made from antibacterial, moisture-wicking fabrics (92 percent polyester, eight percent spandex). All are available in trunk (eight to nine inches long), boxer-brief (11 to 12.5 inches), and a long-leg (14-16 inches) versions. A long-john version will be out in October. Prices from $24 to $37. Spa like an Egyptian: relax, recline, and soak in some fine wine
Rarely does alcohol come to mind as a grooming aid. An essential ingredient in a cocktail, sure, but not a spa service. Nefér Spa (571 Cardero Street), located in Coal Harbour, combines these two unlikely allies in its exclusive Vinoterapia, (wine therapy), treatment. The Egyptian-themed oasis, which opened at the tail end of last year, is the first spa in North America to offer this service. With the Queen of the Nile package, Nefér’s luxurious version of what is, essentially, a wine bath starts in the spa’s marble shower room with a Dead Sea body scrub and is followed by a Vichy shower. The Vinoterapia itself comes next and takes place in the marble bathtub of a room decorated with a constellation of tiny, soft lights. Nefér relies on its own signature blend of red wine, soft water, essential oils, mineral salts, and petals to moisturize the skin and eliminate toxins. Polyphenol, a chemical substance present in red wine, is reputed for its antioxidant properties. After the soak is a muscle-melting, moisturizing massage with blue lotus-infused grape-seed oil. The two-and-a-half-hour luxury treatment runs $450.
