In a hot Stila summer, colour pops on lips and cheeks
Predictably, the hottest makeup trend this summer is warm, sun-kissed faux-glows. But, this season, there’s a cool new pop-art twist. Bronzed beauties are updating their looks with eye-catching hits of hot pink and vivid orange. That’s right: colour-blocking—it’s not just for clothing anymore.
“The pop of colour is either on the cheeks or lips, keeping the eye light,” says Renee Bruinsma, account exec and makeup artist for Stila cosmetics in B.C. She re-cently dished on the latest looks at the Opus Hotel, where Stila was hosting a launch party for its summer collection. “It’s all about colour right now—the brighter the better.”
A great place to start is the kisser. Stila’s Long Wear Lip Color ($26) in Outrageous is an excellent choice. This richly pigmented tangerine lip pen—which, along with the rest of the Stila collection, is sold at Kiss & Makeup (The Village Park Royal in West Van), Sephora (various locations), and Shoppers Drug Mart Beauty Boutiques and Murale (various locations)—is a real showstopper and lasts. If you do decide to go with this kind of a bold mouth, Bruinsma recommends toning down the cheek, but staying in the same colour family. So if you rock a neon-rose mouth, you might want to opt for Stila’s Custom Color Blush in Pink ($29). Don’t be fooled by how intense this powder looks off the face. “It adjusts to anyone’s pH,” says Bruinsma, “so it would look totally different on you as it would on me, because it enhances your natural flush, which is fantastic. So it looks good on literally everybody.”
If you go for a bright cheek, the Convertible Color ($33) in Gladiola is a foolproof way to go. Just remember to pair this vibrant orange cream blush with some subtly juicy lips—think sheer peachy gloss. And if you can’t decide which feature you want to play up with a burst of citrus flavour, Stila is coming out with a new handy travel palette just for us. It’s called Vibrant in Vancouver ($21) and in addition to a selection of neutral eye shadows, it comes with Convertible Color Dual Lip and Cheek Cream in Tiger Lily—a two-for-one, scene-stealing burnt sienna shade.
As for bronzing tips, you might want to throw out last year’s overly shimmery bronzer. And when it comes to application, less is always more.
“I would just highlight the places where the sun naturally hits your face—on the forehead, the top of your nose, on the tops of the cheek bones,” says Bruinsma, who’s in love with Stila’s Set & Bronze Baked Powder Trio ($44). “It’s amazing because you get a little bit of matte and a little bit of glow and these mix together, so you can’t really go wrong with it.”
Another hot way to update your look this summer is adding a line of ever-so-slightly winged black liquid liner on the upper lashes. To intensify the peepers even more (without cluttering up your look), Bruinsma suggests gliding a soft, waterproof liner along the upper lid line. And then keep the rest of the lid clean. Yep, for the first time since disco hit the airwaves, smoky golden blends are not the dominant eye trend this summer. Which is just fine with Bruinsma.
“I mean that goldy, bronzy eye is always beautiful,” she assures before adding, “but right now, people are not afraid of using colour. Women are really embracing the bright cheek, the bright lip, which is great because it just kind of freshens anybody’s look up.”
