New Centre for Digital Media opens at Great Northern Way Campus

The Masters of Digital Media Program at Vancouver's Great Northern Way Campus has new digs.

While the professional graduate program moved into the new Centre for Digital Media on August 20, the $13-million building will have its official launch today (September 21).

The 51,000-square-foot centre, located at 685 Great Northern Way in the False Creek Flats, contains classrooms and studios, as well as 76 units of student rental housing.

“This incredible facility is the new home of the next generation of digital media leaders,” program director Richard Smith said in a news release. “Every time I enter this building I feel like I step into the future; a future created by the highly skilled graduates of our digital media school.”

Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson is scheduled to speak at 5 p.m. as part of the launch.

The University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, the Emily Carr University of Art and Design, and the British Columbia Institute of Technology jointly own the campus.

Graduates of the 16-month program, established in 2007, receive degrees bearing the seals of all four institutions. Tuition costs $33,775 for Canadian citizens and permanent residents, and $50,100 for international students.

Emily Carr University has its own plans to move from Granville Island to the campus.
