New Year’s Eve dresses go beyond the party at local boutiques

Chances are you’ve already made party plans, bought the champagne, and decided who you’ll kiss at midnight. If you still haven’t found the perfect party dress to wear while ringing in the new year, here are five frocks from local boutiques that’ll keep you going well into the wee hours of the morning come January 1.

Jason Matlo Strapless Bow-Front Dress $245 at Ishara Boutique (38 Water Street)

The Vancouver-based designer is known for his silky, party-ready cocktail dresses, and this sweet, strapless number is perfect for New Year’s Eve—and really, any other time of the year. The knee-grazing A-line cut, prim pleats, and bow sash give the dress a vintage feel, but the layered polka-dotted pattern and moody grey hue brings it into present day. Throw on some killer earrings and a bright clutch, and you’re good to go.

Wren Julia Open Back Dress in Flame $297 at Charlie & Lee (223 Union Street)

For cool, leggy “it” girl types, this sleek minidress by Wren has both mod and minimalist appeal. The simple front and crewneck means that you can show off an intricate bib necklace, while the open back makes this dress special enough for a New Year’s Eve-style occasion. A fitted leather motorcycle jacket and a pair of wedge heels would make this dress brunch-appropriate the next morning.

Wilfred Barbizon Dress $215 at Artizia (various locations)

A shimmering sequined dress may be the quintessential New Year’s Eve look. If you plan on counting down in style, shimmy into this Wilfred tank dress, which features a low back and comes in two colours (gold and black). Throwing on a pair of opaque black tights and black pumps will make the gold standout in a sea of little black dresses. Work sequins into your daily wardrobe in 2012 by throwing a chunky knit sweater over top.

Shelley Klassen Flora Dress $225 at Blushing Boutique (579 Richards Street)

A cream and black retro-inspired dress never goes out of style, and the strapless Flora Dress by Shelley Klassen is just right for women looking to celebrate in an ultra-feminine frock. The satin dress features a polka-dotted design all-over, and a rose print around the skirt. If that doesn’t have you swooning, the ruffley hem and oversized bow should.

Girl by Band of Outsiders Silk Creponne Besse Dress $234 at Roden Gray (8 Water Street)

If you’re not big on showing a lot of skin or headed to a low-key New Year’s Eve event, this long-sleeved peekaboo babydoll dress is anything but prudish. The tailored outer shell is made from a delicate silk crepe, and the loose fit of the dress means optimum comfort. If you’re planning on wearing an all-black dress this New Year’s, have fun with makeup and try a bright lip and feathery eyelash extensions.
