Stephanie Aitken
February 12th — March 14th, 2015
Opening February 12th, 6:00 — 10:00 PM

We are pleased to announce Stephanie Aitken as our first exhibiting artist of 2015. Her exhibition titled “Breathing Machines” opens on Thursday, February 12th from 6:00 — 10:00 PM.

These paintings are about trees, tree parts, dead trees, stumps, burn piles, driftwood, branches, cut limbs, birds, beetles, heads, torsos, trunks, light around trees, plants and bodies.

The breath in these paintings is light, light passing in and out through layers of colour. Fast and slow marks, liquid, thin, opaque, a regular give and take.

Stephanie Aitken is a Vancouver based artist. Recent exhibitions include Black Diamond Dust at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, Drama of Perception curated by Sandra Meigs and New Land Paintings, a one-person exhibition, at Deluge Contemporary Art, Victoria, B.C. Stephanie took part in the thematic residency Studio Time: Work of the Living Watch with Geoffrey Farmer at The Banff Centre in the summer of 2012. Stephanie's work has been written about and published in The Walrus, Canadian Art, The Vancouver Review, C Magazine and Border Crossings. She recently designed a series of three hand knotted rugs that have been produced in collaboration with Burritt Bros. in Vancouver and weavers in the Kathmandu Valley.
