Barking Sphinx presents three nights of creative improvisation. Our finest local innovators meet with guests; pianist Achim Kaufmann (Berlin), poet Gabriele Guenther (Berlin), guitarist René Lussier (Montreal); and Dálava (Vancouver/New York).

Over the past 20 years Vancouver has become recognized internationally as a centre for creative music. On March 27-28-29 2015, Barking Sphinx hosts the second annual Meeting of these improvisers, featuring an impressive list of established and emerging members of the burgeoning Vancouver scene - Torsten Müller, bass; Ron Samworth, guitar; Peggy Lee, cello; Dylan van der Schyff, percussion; and JP Carter, trumpet electronics. Concerts will take place over three evenings; 8pm at Western Front, and 11pm at Main Street’s China Cloud.

This year Vancouver’s creative music improvisers will collaborate with Montreal’s René Lussier, whose impressive body of work represents a full course in musique actuelle, a term he helped to peg down; Berlin-based pianist Achim Kaufmann and visual artist/poet Gabriele Guenther; dancer Delia Brett; multi-disciplinary theatre artist Alex Ferguson; and Dálava, a group creating music based on Moravian folk songs.

Concert-goers will experience these performers in different combinations over the three nights – from solo sets by Lussier and Kaufmann, to a large ensemble comprised of local improvisers led by Lussier, and Ghosts Before Breakfast, a group inspired by the spirit of dada, taking its name from the 1928 dada film by Hans Richter. For this performance the group will accompany, and be accompanied by, a number of early works in experimental animation and dada film.
