Chinese woodblock prints is one of the most important art forms among Chinese folk arts. Chinese people love to celebrate the Spring Festival (Lunar Near Year Day) by putting up the New Year woodblock prints on walls which express their spirits, emotions and happiness.

Henan Province is the birthplace of Chinese civilization and has a special significance in Chinese history. During Xia Dynasty (c. 2070 – c. 1600 B.C.E.) to Northern Song Dynasty (960–1127 A.D.), more than twenty dynasties either established their capitals at or moved their capitals to this region where the civilization flourished.

Henan, the political, economic and cultural centre of ancient China for thousands of years, is also the birthplace of Chinese New Year woodblock prints. The Henan woodblock prints are rich in content. Most of them were created based on folklores, myths, legends, theatre characters, common life and auspicious patterns. Its exquisite compositions, vibrant colors, bold but delicate strokes, embody the simplicity and openness of Henan people.

Henan New Year woodblock prints is listed in “China’s National Intangible Culture Heritage Protection list”. Each print reflects the vivid life style of the Henan people. The New Year woodblock prints themselves are like an encyclopedia, by reading it we can learn the rich contents and China’s long and brilliant history and culture.
