Explore the spirited music, beautiful artistic traditions and delicious homestyle fare of Ukraine in this weekend-long Arts & Culture Fest held at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre in Strathcona. Pre-Register for Workshops (discount when you sign up for multiple sessions!)

Saturday 1:00-3:00 pm $25
Create traditional Ukrainian bead jewelry with artist Tetiana Zaruba. Ukraine’s bead jewelry features intricate patterns reminiscent of widely-known aboriginal beadwork. Includes your creation to take home, quality materials, expert instruction and use of all tools and supplies.

Saturday 3:15-4:45 pm $20
Ukrainian Folksong Workshop with Beverly Dobrinsky of Barvinok Choir. Come and explore the “bilij holos/pure voice” folkstyle of singing from Eastern Europe. Folk songs from Ukraine and Ukrainian-Canadian traditions will be highlighted. Knowledge of Ukrainian language not necessary.

Sunday 12:30-2:30 pm $25
Learn to make Pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs, with expert and author Joan Brander. Colourful decorated eggs made with beeswax and dyes in a technique akin to batik dates to ancient pagan times. Includes your decorated egg to take home, instruction and use of all equipment and supplies.

Sunday 3:00-4:30 pm $20
Instrumental workshop with Jeffrey Chow of Vancouver Folk Orchestra. Explore the folk music traditions of a number of Eastern European countries. Instruments like the mandolin, accordion, flute and violin are all hallmarks of Ukraine’s strong musical tradition, as are the more obscure bandura, lira and tsymbaly. The workshop is centred on sheet music and chord charts.

Sunday 11:00 – 3:30 pm (various meal prices)
Perogy Lunch and mini-bazaar. Your favourite Ukrainian foods will be served including perogies, Ukrainian sausage, vegetarian borshch & cabbage rolls, baked goods & refreshments. Bazaar includes a variety of artisanal products.
