In 1917, Prohibition hit Vancouver harder than a slug of bathtub gin, knocking the city to its knees. Saloon doors swung closed for good, forcing law-abiding citizens into an illicit world of bootlegged spirits and mob-run drinking dens. Prohibition City is a 90 minute walking tour where you discover the secrets of Vancouver’s Prohibition-era past. Hear the true tales of the city’s biggest legends, like corrupt mayor L.D. Taylor, notorious mob boss Joe Celona and glamorous showgirl Yvonne DeCarlo. Walk the cobblestone streets where bootlegging, rum-running and illegal gambling once ran rampant. You’ll visit some of the city’s most impressive heritage buildings, including the infamous Sun Tower and ornate Dominion Building, which once vied for the title of tallest building in the British Empire. But be warned, you’ll need sharp wits – and an even sharper pencil – to survive in Prohibition City.

Runs Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 7 p.m. Meets at Cathedral Square, across the street from Holy Rosary Cathedral at the intersection of Dunsmuir and Richards streets.
