How Long Can You Contain an Echo?
Megan Hepburn, Simone Jarvis, Shelley Penfold, Tess Rafael
September 17th — October 17th, 2015
Opening September 17th, 7:00 — 10:00PM

looking into and through
shadows move

light falls from above
and I can see down

the path
a flicker of movement

birds dive in the rose patch
specks of green and gold part ways

my surroundings dance and fall apart

in the copper pot full of water
I can see myself looking at me

the house creaks
"how long can you contain an echo?"

Field Contemporary presents an exhibition of new paintings from four painters. Each artist provides their own insight into the verses of abstraction. Experience, memory, fiction, time, history, material application, process, and playful methodologies are subjects in the making of these paintings. The application of paint disguises representation and solid structures. Spatial realms are constructed out of forms and lines while mark making creates it's own dialogue amongst the paintings.

Megan Hepburn received her BFA from Emily Carr University and MFA from Concordia University in 2010, and was fortunate to study with exceptional painting faculty in both institutions. She has had exhibitions across Canada and Europe since 2006. In 2010 she was the recipient of the Joseph Plaskett Award for Excellence in Painting and shortlisted for the RBC Painting Competition. This year she is a nominee for the RBC Painting Competition again, coming up in November. Megan has participated in numerous residencies internationally, most recently at the 2015 Salzburg Summer Academy of Fine Art in Austria, mentored by Varda Caivano.

Simone Jarvis is an artist currently working out of Vancouver, BC. Originally from Calgary, AB, she holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr. She works primarily in painting exploring the possibilities of medium and surface relationships. Her paintings and drawings continue to be organized primarily by colour and form working with thinned out oil paint. Recent exhibitions include “Towards a Fictional History of Colour” at BAF as well as a solo show “Macro Paintings and Sculptures” at Avenue Gallery.

Shelley Penfold is a painter based in Vancouver, BC. She completed her B.F.A at Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2003 and a M.F.A at the University of Victoria in 2009. She has exhibited nationally and her works have been placed in private and corporate collections.

Tess Rafael received her BA in Urban Studies from Brown University and studied painting through the Rhode Island School of Design in 2010 and Columbia University School of the Arts in 2011. She has exhibited in North America and Europe. She currently lives and works in Vancouver, Canada.
