This exhibition documents Kwakwaka’wakw artist Beau Dick’s 2014 journey from UBC to Ottawa, which culminated in the ceremonial breaking of a Haida copper shield on the steps of Parliament Hill. The copper-breaking ceremony was a way to mark the ruptured relationship between the Government and First Nations people, and to pass the burden of the wrongs done to First Nations people from them to the Government of Canada. Lalakenis/All Directions reveals how ceremony and performance can be powerful tools of expression surrounding very contemporary issues.
