Following a number of phenomenal screenings at The Rio Theatre dedicated to the Purple One in May, we received an overwhelmingly positive response – for even more Prince. We hear you, Vancouver! Join us on Thursday, June 30 for a double bill featuring PURPLE RAIN and UNDER THE CHERRY MOON. There is no better way to toast, honour, and celebrate this creative, charismatic, enigmatic and totally uncompromising musical genius than with an audience – and two his best-loved soundtrack contributions – on the big screen, and with our big sound. See them the way they’re meant to be seen!
Based loosely on his own life story, Prince’s film debut in PURPLE RAIN (1984) cast him as “The Kid,” the talented but troubled musician in Minneapolis struggling to make it big with his band, The Revolution. The film was a box office hit, and possessed a phenomonal soundtrack (including Oscar-winner ‘When Doves Cry’) that forever altered the course of his careeer. Many fans and critics consider the music of PURPLE RAIN signature work, spawning numerous hit singles that would dominate airwaves for years to come. In 1986, Prince followed up PURPLE RAIN by making his directorial debut (and letting his comedic side be known) with UNDER THE CHERRY MOON. Though the film itself was a complete critical and commercial disaster, its soundtrack did spawn one of the Purple One’s most lauded albums, ‘Parade,’ which features hits including ‘Kiss,’ ‘Sometimes it Snows in April,’ and ‘Mountains.’ Over the years the film (which also marks the feature debut of Kristin Scott Thomas) has emerged as something of a cult-classic.
UNDER THE CHERRY MOON (Prince, 1986 / 98 mins /18A) | The situation for professional gigolos Christopher Tracy and his brother, who make their careers out of swindling wealthy French women in the Mediterranean, gets complicated when love unexpecctedly gets in the way.
