An installation showcasing 500-600 hand cut paper wings, Flight Path / Taking Flight pays homage to the nightly commute of thousands of crows across the Vancouver skyline has been a source of fascination for the artist since arriving in the city over twelve years ago. It is a rare and special occurrence to witness birds gathering into large flocks in an urban setting as these crows do. The installation is inspired by the artist’s fascination with watching birds in flight, and the mystery and magic of their ability to move as one. Rachael explores the beauty of repetitive forms found in nature, and creates intricate and complex works through the simple process of cutting and sculpting paper.
