Angela Teng’s recent body of work utilizes a labored dedication to the processes of craft, through abstraction and studio-based exploration of materials and painting. This work reconsiders what is traditionally required to make a painting and suggests otherwise by renegotiating how a picture can be made. By maintaining truth to materials, the paintings aren’t trying to disguise the material, but rather generate an optical sensation from the consequence of the female perspective. This indulgence of paint provides visual pleasure, while the tactile and sculptural qualities evoke a direct relationship to the body through the physicality of the paint itself.

Angela Teng is a painter living and working in Vancouver, British Columbia. She received her B.F.A from Emily Carr University in 2011 majoring in painting. She was a panelist in the discussion “Painting and Materiality in Vancouver” during the Canadian Art Gallery Hop Vancouver 2014.
