The Fort Gallery invites you to their upcoming show entitled
PROXIMITY AND DISTANCE
April 26 – May 14, 2017
Opening Reception: Thursday May 4th, 7-9 pm

Lisa Nickel’s new painting series, PROXIMITY AND DISTANCE, is an exploration of personal and social responsibility based on how we live and how we view the living situations of those in proximity to us, but also of those at a distance from us.

“My work is deeply influenced by philosophical and ethical thinkers, especially the writings of Judith Butler. These paintings flow from her considerations about how to sustain a posture of radical egalitarianism when faced with the ethical dilemmas, emerging through the mediated images of global reporting that index realities, which sometimes produce reversibility in our responsiveness between what is proximate and what is distant.”

Joy Munt’s painting series, Rain, Steam and Speed, juxtaposes the elements of industry side by side with the natural landscape to create a dialogue. Is it a celebration of industry, recognition of its limitations or simply nostalgia?

“This world of industry is my muse for both the sentiment generated by it, being a huge part of my landscape memory, and for the freedoms it allows us in our daily life. Yet, within the sentiment I have for this deteriorating world of industry is knowledge of the need for environmental change - our landscape depends on it.”
