Every year UBC Asian Studies celebrates Punjabi language and culture with this event, in honour and memory of Harjit Kaur Sidhu, devoted wife, mother, and strong advocate for education, Punjabi culture and language, and women’s issues. Every year, the program features a keynote address or performance, awards for a local Punjabi-language author (this year, the well known author and popular historian, Nadeem Parmar) and student-contest winners, and student performances. This year, Asian Studies partners with Rangmanch Punjabi theatre for a program that features two plays enacted by special guest from India, the theatre and film actor and activist Samuel John. The program also takes place in association with an Arts-based workshop with the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies that culminates in a performance on May 7; selections of the May 7 workshop may be presented at this event. Organized by UBC Asian Studies and made possible with the generous support of the Sidhu Family, UBC Asian Studies and the Department of Theatre and Film, Rangmanch Punjabi Theatre, and the Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies.
