For this year’s National Schizophrenia and Psychosis Awareness Day, come celebrate the artistic accomplishments of those living with severe and persistent mental illness.
Sponsored by the Otsuka Lundbeck Alliance, B.C. Schizophrenia Society presents Re-Mind: A day of art, music & readings an event aimed to bring people together to end the stigma surrounding mental illness with live music, food, and drinks!
When a person is diagnosed with a mental illness, that person and their loved ones face a lot of stigma – from friends, family and even themselves. There is a process of grief and loss and they face the daunting task of having to re-understand their identity. Art, music and writing are some of the tools and strategies that people use in their journey of recovery to re-frame themselves. This event was developed to highlight and “re-mind” people that there is still hope for those affected by severe and persistent mental illnesses.
Over a dozen artists will be exhibited throughout the day, with live performances from musicians and authors in the evening. All artists, musicians and authors are people who have lived experience of severe and persistent mental illness.
Come be inspired and shift your thinking about serious and persistent mental illness. We are excited to feature authors Bryn Ditmars & Erin Hawkes, who will be reading passages from their respective books, written about their own experiences living with schizophrenia. Don’t miss Oliver O'dea, a musician living with mental illness. Oliver hopes to incite peace and smash stigma through his music and Trevor Mills, a rapper and mental health advocate reveals how untreated mental health problems clot into addiction.
