East Van Strings plus Colin Cowan & Tommy Babin Duo

At door only

East Van Strings: Initially sparked by an appreciation for the string quartets of Bartok, Webern and Berg, Gordon Grdina’s East Van Strings has dramatically expanded its range to include elements of free jazz, Arabic taqsim, Indian rhythmic cycles, and 20th century minimalism. The guitarist/composer/oud player’s striking melodic motifs allow for organic development by longtime collaborators Jesse Zubot violin, Eyvind Kang viola, and Peggy Lee cello, plus special guest Jon Irabagon on tenor and sopranino saxes. Named one of New York’s 25 Jazz Icons by Time Out New York, Downbeat Rising Star Irabagon has worked with Dave Douglas, Barry Altschul, and Mary Halvorson.

Colin Cowan & Tommy Babin Duo: A meeting of two of the Vancouver creative music scene’s most sought-after and inventive bassists. Known for his work with Dálava, Dada Plan, and Black Mountain, Colin Cowan is a far-ranging, wonderfully expressive improviser. A monster player, Tommy Babin (Benzene, Haram) plays with muscularity and rare artistic vision.
