Owner Vikram has been at the forefront of Vancouver's dining scene since he opened the doors to Vij's in 1994, and his no-nonsense, all-female, Punjabi brigade in the kitchen creates almost everything by hand, from yogurt and cheeses, to hand-sifting all of the restaurant's spices. A step above your typical butter chicken fare, Vij's menu includes mutton kabobs with Bengali-style curry, jackfruit in black cardamom and cumin masala, seared venison medallions with figs and khoa in pomegranate curry, and wine-marinated lamb popsicles in fenugreek cream curry on turmeric and spinach potatoes.
Vij's drinks menu is also a cut above typical Indian restaurants with a well-edited wine, beer, and cocktails list, and a non-alcoholic ginger-lemon drink.
