There are differing reports on the exact numbers, but it's clear that the glossy cinematic version of Fifty Shades of Grey has been a solid box-office success on its opening night.

Box Office Mojo has the adaptation of the E. L. James novel in first place with $30.2 million on its first night in North American theatres.

The BDSM-themed film reportedly ranks fourth among R-rated movies on its opening, ranking behind The Matrix Reloaded ($37.5 million), The Hangover, Part II ($31.6 million), and American Sniper ($30.3 million).

According to Box Office Mojo, Fifty Shades is still far behind the $36 million taken in on the first night of the first Twilight film.

Variety has predicted that the movie will capture $75 million to $85 million at the North American box office this weekend.

Meanwhile, the Wrap has reported that Fifty Shades has earned $66 million after two days in international box-office revenues. This should put on track to surpass The Matrix Reloaded on its opening weekend after combining the domestic and international numbers.
