VIFF 2013 review: Borgman
(Netherlands)

Nobody’s motivations are clear (or predictable) in Alex van Warmerdam’s psychological thriller, which only makes it harder to look away. Loyalties switch, and soon enough there’s a beautiful underwater garden of corpses when a community of subterranean forest dwellers do high concept mischief to an affluent Dutch family. There’s a hint of something paranormal going on, but that’s really just nature correcting the balance in this magnetically strange act of class war.
