VIFF 2013 review: Money for Nothing: Inside the Federal Reserve

(USA)

Think you know how banking works in North America? Turns out the system governed by Washington, and tied to our lives by Ottawa, is a relatively recent invention, thanks to FDR’s New Deal. And it’s one increasingly weakened by cults of personality, such as that of former longtime fed head Alan Greenspan, keener on mollifying presidents than in protecting the public. This well designed doc makes its economic elements surprisingly clear; except for certain Wall Street players, there really is no such thing as money for nothing, and even the cheques aren’t free.

      Cinematheque, September 29 (4:15 p.m.) and October 5 (9 p.m.); SFU, October 8 (11 a.m.)
