VIFF 2013 review: My Prairie Home

(Canada)

Don’t miss this lovingly crafted and highly original doc, which gets on the Greyhound with peripatetic Calgary singer-songwriter Rae Spoon, who dresses butch and sings like a haunted angel. Grey areas of gender and the mysterious origins of creativity are equally explored as Spoon’s life history is imaginatively intertwined with performances that can happen anywhere, at any time. And resourceful filmmaker Chelsea McMullan’s probing eye makes her prairie locations looming characters in the expansive background.

      Rio, September 29 (9:15 p.m.) and October 1 (4 p.m.)
