VIFF 2013 review: A Place in Heaven
(Israel)
1 of 2 2 of 2
There are too many balls flying in this overambitious saga of one Israeli family both buoyed and crushed by a patriarch who excels in war and politics but not as a father. The uneasy bond between religion and brute strength is intriguingly invoked, and Alon Aboutboul is excellent as the hard-assed general. But there are as many characters and subplots as you’d find in a miniseries, crammed numbingly into just under two hours.
Vancity, September 27 (4:30 p.m.); International Village, October 3 (1:40 p.m.) and 6 (6:45 p.m.)
