VIFF 2013 review: Oil Sands Karaoke
A barmaid complains that we hear a lot of “bullshit” about Fort McMurray, Alberta, gateway to the oil sands and the location of this low-impact documentary. Instead of delving too deeply into that environmental and political quagmire, filmmaker Charles Wilkinson introduces us to a handful of locals who operate gargantuan machinery by day and perform karaoke by night (prepare for sincere attempts at “Achy Breaky Heart”.) They’re all running from something, it seems, but rationalizing the work they do only reveals a different set of traps.
