VIFF 2013 review: The Spirit of ’45

(U.K.)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Your blood will boil as a parade of octagenarian (and older) doctors, labourers, and other survivors of Britain’s greatest generation ponder all that’s been lost since the working class mobilized after World War II and elected a Labour government that actually, bravely kept its promises. Health care, housing, and nationalized industry followed. And now it’s all but gone, stealthily dismantled by a parade of swine that went nuclear in the Thatcher era. Some will knock veteran filmmaker Ken Loach for the polemics, as if the alternative hasn’t been infinitely worse.

      Playhouse, September 30 (7 p.m.); Centre, October 8 (4 p.m.)
