VIFF 2013 review: Nebraska

(USA)

Crazy old Bruce Dern easily deserved that best-actor nod he got out at Cannes this year for his portrayal of a relic whose verbal constipation conceals a fool’s wisdom—whether he even knows it or not. Gradually, this Alexander Payne–directed road movie (which skipped TIFF, unbelievably) turns into a big black-and-white metaphor for the sad demise of a great idea (America, that is). As Dern’s empathetic but frustrated son, SNL’s Will Forte is among a cast that elevates this last picture show well out of the realm of cliché. A real score for this year’s opener.
