VIFF 2013 review: Down River

(Canada)

Viewers may have different favourites among stories woven around a suddenly ill woman played by Helen Shaver—her character is a tough-loving mother hen to three young women in the same apartment building—but the movie constitutes a beautiful experience, from funny starts to a deeply moving finish. It’s also an apt tribute to the late local actor Babz Chula, whose playful spirit infuses actor-turned-director Ben Ratner’s most mature work to date.

      Playhouse, October 5 (6:30 p.m.); Rio, October 9 (4:30 p.m.)
