VIFF 2013 review: The Italian Character: The Story of a Great Italian Orchestra

(Italy)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

A group of passionately engaged musicians, centred around conductor Antonio Pappano, an Anglo-Italian who gets an unusual amount of life, and loyalty, from the mostly young musicians (and older guest conductors, like Valery Gergiev) inspired by his egalitarian approach to making old music sound new. As often happens, the rehearsals are even more exciting than opening night.

A culture and a country viewed through the voices of a beautiful orchestra. I saw this film at its world premiere last night. I think the description in VIFF misses the point -- there is so much of the relationship of individuals and their conductor and how they work, so much of the relationship between a country and its people, and the setting is this orchestra of brilliant musicians, their director, and the guest soloists and conductors who love to work with them. And how the generosity of Italian spirit, amazing work ethic, creativity, individualism, and passion come together to beautify life and soul. Whether you are a fan of classical music or not, i think you will be inspired.
