Strong-faced Barbara star Nina Hoss anchors this Teutonic western set in 1890s British Columbia. Despite some coincidence-laden contrivances that weaken the ending, the film, which follows a ragtag German expedition in search of Yukon gold, upends as many genre conventions as it upholds, making for a potent, if subdued, viewing experience.
