VIFF 2013 review: Ilo Ilo

(Singapore)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Ilo Ilo starts off as such a simple domestic portrait that you might be surprised to find yourself so drawn into the dysfunction and class tension that brew in one little apartment. Perhaps that’s because the parents’ stress over working hard to keep their family afloat will feel so familiar, or the plight of the homesick Filipino maid who arrives to care for their troubled son is so relevant. Carefully crafted and understated.
