VIFF 2013 review: A Place to Take Away

(Brazil)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Combining rough footage with sometimes randomly gathered images taken by foreign tourists in Brazil’s poorest favelas, this oddball doc looks at the controversial trend toward treating sprawling shantytowns like wildlife reserves—in which the animals make their own souvenirs to sell to rapt travellers. Does slum tourism help raise global awareness or does it just further entrench poverty?
