VIFF 2013 review: Blind Detective

(Hong Kong)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Hong Kong filmmaker Johnny To is one-man entertainment machine, but the gears grind here, in a 130-minute mess that tries to fuse a gruesome thriller to an action comedy, plus goofy romance. It’s surprising to see veteran cool guy Andy Lau flail so cartoonishly in the title role, forcing frequent screen partner Sammi Cheng, as a clumsy female cop who joins the latest case, to match his pratfalls. Don’t see.
