VIFF 2013 review: Ludwig II

(Germany/Austria)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

The fifth screen attempt—and one of the longest—at capturing the Mad King of Bavaria is aimed at a more youthful audience, with Sabin Tambrea effective as the flamboyant monarch who trumpeted the arts at the expense of (an angry) military, but repressed his own sexuality to debilitating effect. When it switches to another actor as the almost-middle aged Ludwig, obsessed with building rococo castles, the 140-minute saga gets turgid. Still, it drives home the notion that one man’s insanity is another generation’s massive tourist attraction.
