VIFF 2013 review: Vojta Lavička: Ups and Downs

(Czech Republic)

A fabulous musician and troubled soul is followed in this peripatetic doc, which finds the brilliantly eclectic violinist forever struggling in the half-light between Czech assimilation—he even hosts Prague TV shows—and his Rom heritage, which makes him a target in some ignorant quarters. His own self-destructive, or at least self-limiting, impulses are on view, if never quite explained.
