VIFF 2013 review: Flashback Memories 3D

(Japan)

    1 of 2 2 of 2

Japanese didgeridoo performer Goma suffered loss of memory, attention, and emotional control after sustaining a brain injury from a traffic accident. This unconventional, uneven, and sometimes psychedelic documentary starts off with concert footage, home movies, and fragmented facts about his career, but it only truly takes off when Goma and his wife relate the story of his struggle to recover. By the time of his comeback concert after the Great East Japan Earthquake, you’ll want to groove to the infectious rhythms, both literal and figurative.
