DOXA 2015 review: Canadian Hobbies: Shorts program

How do you spend your after-hours? Some Canadians have enjoyably quirky pastimes, ranging from the geeky to the intriguing, as these snapshots reveal.

A few provide more gawk factor than insight, such as the brief “The eBay Pickup”, which follows a man who purchases the Mark IV antibear suit of Project Grizzly fame. Meanwhile, “Mars Barb” profiles a Vancouverite who aspires to be part of the first human settlement on Mars. Other stories surprise with poignant underpinnings, such as the tragedy that inspired a Brampton superhero in “The Good Knight (aka Batman)”. Still others have unexpectedly strong hooks, like “The Match”, about the Prairie Wrestling Alliance in northern Alberta, struggling to retain an audience. “The Queen of Rosefish and Her Kingdom” literally hooks with the story of a masterful Québécoise ice fisher.

After viewing the collection, you may find yourself pursuing unconventional extracurricular activities of your own.
